Why Caravela

named after the old portuguese sailing ships. see the little sail on top?

The caravela-portuguesa, or Portuguese man-of-war, looks like one creature but it's actually a colony of tiny, specialized animals, each with its own job. Some catch food, some share it, some keep the whole thing afloat. None of them could make it alone. Together, they're one of the most striking and powerful things in the ocean.

That's what we're building: a community where everyone brings what they have, everyone is held, and together we're a powerhouse. Soft, strong, and fiercely protective of each other.

Meet your coach

Hi, I'm Zoe. I'm a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and I'll be teaching class.

For a long time, I didn't feel safe in my own body or in the world. Jiu jitsu changed that. Stepping onto the mats was like walking through a portal into a different way of being: stronger, calmer, and more like myself than I'd ever felt.

I want every woman and girl to have access to that process. But BJJ is expensive and a lot of gyms aren't spaces where women can feel comfortable. So we're making our own. I'll go slow, explain everything, and you'll always be in control of what you do. I can't wait to meet you on the mat.

xo, Zoe

How the
night flows

5:30pm Arrive, settle in, grab some water, meet everyone
5:45pm Class: gentle warmup, how to move on the mat, how to tap out, and a few fundamentals
6:45pm Dinner together, with chai, coffee, and a home-cooked meal

How we roll.

This space was built for women who may have never felt at home in a gym. Here's our promise:

  1. 1.Partner work is always optional and you choose your partners.
  2. 2.We teach tapping out first, so you always know how to stop.
  3. 3.No one will touch you without warning.
  4. 4.You can sit out, take a break, or just watch, anytime, no explanation needed.

Not ready to roll? Come anyway.

Class spots are limited, but there's always room at the table. Come watch from the sidelines, cheer people on, sip some chai, and stay for dinner. You don't have to step on the mat to be part of this.

Bringing your daughter

Girls 3 and up are welcome on the mat. For our littlest ones, it's all about play: rolling, balancing, and having fun. A parent or guardian stays for the whole evening.

What to wear

  • Leggings or athletic pants
  • Fitted t-shirt or rash guard
  • Skip anything with zippers or buttons and remove all jewelry
  • Trim your nails before class
  • Bring a water bottle
  • We'll have the mats. (that one's on us)

Give what feels right

Jiu jitsu shouldn't be a luxury. This night is donation-based, with a suggested $5 to $20. Donations help cover mats, food, and future gatherings. No one is ever turned away.

This is just the beginning

Caravela BJJ is the first of many gatherings. We're dreaming up a bigger movement centered on mutual aid and an open door where you can always find a warm cup of something and a soft place to land. Follow along so you don't miss what's next.

F.A.Q.

ask us anything else!

Q. I've never done anything like this. Is that okay?

A. That's exactly who this is for. No experience, fitness level, or gear required.

Q. I'm nervous about being touched or grappling with someone.

A. Totally understandable. Partner work is optional, you pick who you work with, and you can stop or step out anytime. Plenty of people spend their first class just learning solo movements, and that's a great start.

Q. What if I'm not in shape?

A. Come as you are. We move at a beginner pace, and you set your own limits.

Q. Do I have to stay for dinner?

A. Not at all, but we'd love it if you did. Dinner is where the community really happens.

Q. Can I just come for dinner?

A. Yes! Watch class, skip class, whatever feels right. Just let us know when you RSVP so we cook enough.

Q. Is there a waiver?

A. Yes. Everyone on the mat signs a short liability waiver, and parents sign for daughters. You'll get it with your RSVP confirmation.

Q. Where is it?

A. South Austin. We'll send the exact address once you RSVP.

Q. Any dietary needs?

A. Tell us in your RSVP and we'll make sure there's something good for you.

Limited spots on the mat. Unlimited room at the table.

I'M COMING FOR

Got it. See you there!
